LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK

World Heritage status was bestowed on Lamington in 1994 in recognition of its high biodiversity, and the fact it contains a living museum of the evolutionary steps taken in the development of Australia’s modern day flora. It now includes 22,000 hectares of varying forest types, from temperate Antarctic Beech forest high on the border ranges through the sub-tropical rainforests, to the dry eucalypt forest of the northern Escarpment. Lamington National Park provides food and shelter for a huge array of sub-tropical birdlife (over 160 species), reptiles, frogs, mammals and invertebrates.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK:

  • Tamborine, Springbrook, Beechmont, and Lamington are remnants of the Tweed volcano’s northern flank.
  • Today, Lamington is one of the few places where Nothofagus and Araucaria plants stand together to remind us of the ‘golden age’ when the climate was warm and wet, just before the new flowering plants overtook conifers.
  • Lamington National Park has over 500 waterfalls.
  • About 58 plants and 22 animals are protected within the National Park, as they are classified as vulnerable, rare, or threatened with extinction.
