- Listed as endangered, the bird species ‘Gould’s Petrel’ only bred on islands offshore from Port Stephens. Fortunately, the species has been able to come off the endangered list after recently extending their nesting locations to other islands.
- A lighthouse was built in Port Stephens in 1862 after 24 vessels were shipwrecked trying to enter its harbour.
- Soldiers Point was initially named Friendship Point.
