“EVERY PLAYER A WINNER!”… WIN/WIN CAN WIN THE DAY!!
Posted on , in ANALOGIES & STORIES, by Dr Garry Richards OAM FAIMAre Win/Win In Business And Personal Negotiations A Fantasy? Can It Be A Reality?
The sideshow promoter knows that everyone likes to win. But often in the modern world, one company’s gain means another company’s loss.
At the individual level, we have come to accept the theory in management that win/win is a good idea and that in interpersonal relationships it’s a good way to go. So, how do you do it?
Well, there are a lot of consultants and counsellors who are skilled at training people in this but achieving it still comes down to privately adopting this goal and working at it.
At the company level, it gets harder: partnerships and mergers are often seen as win/win but end up being a takeover. At the international level, it all becomes even more complex.
Every now and again something comes along that stands out as an inspirational example of what’s possible if there is goodwill and creativity.
For example, In these days of international shipping and trade, it’s hard to keep ecosystems pure.
The great lakes of America have become deleteriously infected with the Asian Carp fish, which is so invasive as a species that it is threatening rivers and lakes and indigenous fish species. It is a real problem. In China, however, Asian Carp is seen as a delicious dish and is in great demand.
The penny dropped. America and China are exploring the export of Asian Carp to China. Happy tummies in China reduced and controlled carp populations in America… WIN/WIN!
If they can pull it off…it will be a classic win/win on a global scale. “Every player is a winner!”
CONCLUSION
If any level of goodwill can be established then good creative negotiations probably will give us more win/win than we realise…even in areas where it might be thought impossible.
